| Sleek Harman/Kardon Desktop Speakers | Is this review helpful?

Pros: Aesthetically appealing; Good finish Cons: Sound is ordinary; Too many wires .

Are those Harman/Kardon Soundsticks II in your pocket or are you just happy to see me? Ok, maybe that is the wrong analogy as these speakers will not actually fit into a pocket - not even a really big one.
In fact, if we want to play with analogies, think primitive creatures of the ocean as these speakers look more like a prehistoric jellyfish with the subwoofer unit and the little tentacles in the form of wires and satellite speakers. And the blue light makes these speakers also look like a bluebottle, but I am unsure whether the designers had that maritime intention in mind.
But acoustically, well, they are a touch ordinary. Although the HK speakers serve up very clear treble, strong bass, and overall crisp and clean sound and can be pumped up to be extremely loud - whether playing Net radio, CDs or PC music, the sound is quite good but at the same time is not something to write home about either.
In terms of specs that are available, the frequency range is 44Hz – 20 kHz; amplifier output power is 20 Wrms for the subwoofer and 10 Wrms per channel for the satellite speakers and the entire connected unit weighs just under 4 kgs.
And yes, they have very discreet touch-sensitive volume buttons which work very well and I admit, they do look out of this world, but at $330 a pop, if aesthetics is not your gig but are more obsessed with complete and utter perfection in sound, I would certainly not consider them.
However, if you like your speakers to come from the set of Star Trek Generations, and if you are not a total sound perfection Nazi, then they should be well worth considering. In fact, for the vast majority of PC, gaming and small to medium TV users, they would be more or less perfect. Oh, and did I mention how great they look? |

Pros: Small size and space age shape Cons: really designed for single computer user - not living room This is almost the idea solution to the audio part of a home entertainment system. While I don't appreciate listening to TV through a sound system, it is a requirement of DVDs. The small foot print of this system, plus the mysterious blue light in the dome, adds a future aesthetic that might not suit every living room but it certainly does mine. While the system was designed for single person use as part of a computer desk/system, it fills up an enitre room with sound quite well. The only downside to this kind of use is the lack of remote control volume. |

Pros: Perfect size, with the best sound!! Cons: No on/off switch. I was surprised it was plastic but its great, it looks like my fishtanks! By day it blends in to the loungeroom [which i wish my current surround sound would] but at night stands out with the blue light inside! Perfect size and really light. Best sound system for a unit/apartment!! The only downside is it doesnt have an on/off switch so you have to turn it off at the powerpoint but the blue light reminds you its on. |

Great speaker. I had reservations about 'Plug and play', but that's exactly how these are installed. Perfect for playing music or gaming via the internet. Excellent sound qaulity. |
| Phenomenal Sound from Small, Sexy Speakers | Is this review helpful?
 | by S.B Braddon, ACT on May 10, 2005 139 out of 263 people found the following review helpful:
The Harmon Kardon SoundSticks II are the best quality mini speakers available on the market - hands down. The sound quality is simply phenomenal, the treble is sweet and the subwoofer produces a rich, deep bass.
The supplied power pack accepts 100-240 V AC - 50-60Hz, so it is useable anywhere.
The pictures shown on the website are slightly deceiving - the speakers are bigger than you would expect, the build quality is excellent. The components feel "weighty", not light and cheap feeling. The transparent plastic is a high quality polycarbonate - they look great and function beautifully.
PROs: Easy to install (plug and go!), great looks, absolutely amazing sound.
CONs: No power switch (always on), no visual indication of volume level.
Digital Home has the best price I've seen for these speakers. Spend the few extra bucks, get ten-fold the quality of sound. |
