| After a shaky start...all good. | Is this review helpful?

Pros: Changes the way you watch television Cons: The never-ending round of software upgrades I bought the Beyonwiz DP-P1 (from JB Hifi of course) on the recommendation of a mate who had the more expensive DP-S1.
After a shaky start to our relationship, the Beyonwiz has changed the way I watch TV.
Lately it seems like there's always two programs on at once that I want to watch. With the Beyonwiz's dual HD tuners I can record one while watching the other. Then I can play back the recorded program at my leisure without having to sit through the ads.
Likewise the timeshift function means that if something's started and you're called away (to cook dinner or for a phone call) you can re-wind live TV and pick up where you left off (again skipping through the ads).
The ice-tv guide feature is also really useful. Aside from being able to browse what's on and program the Beyonwiz to record upcoming shows onscreen, you can do the same from any PC or your mobile when you're out and about. For me this is very much worth the small subscription cost.
The picture the Beyonwiz pipes to the TV through an HDMI connection is brilliant and you can also connect digital cameras or memory cards to it to view the images/video onscreen.
The only thing I haven't yet managed to get it to do yet is export a recorded program to my PC and back it up to DVD - although this is possible - I just haven't really had the motivation to try yet!
I would heartily reccomend the Beyonwiz - with a few small caviats.
As I mentioned earlier - we had a shaky start to our relationship as I've never previously owned a piece of equipment that doesn't do everything you wanted it to do straight out of the box.
The DP-P1 is not a device that you can simply unpack, plug in and never have to think about again.
There are sofware (they call them firmware) upgrades that come out on a semi-regular basis that you need to download from the internet and install on the Beyonwiz using a USB stick.
Many of these upgrades are improvements which give your Beyonwiz extra features(such as the ice-tv remote programming ability I mentioned earlier), but many are also bug or glitch fixes.
I'd never experienced this before but as long as you're reasonably tech-savvy you shouldn't have any problems doing this.
Similarly in order for your DP-PI to access the ice-tv program guide features, it needs to be directly plugged into your home network (there are apparantly wireless solutions but I wasn't technically advanced enough to make them work!).
When the TV signal drops out the box can freeze up and refuse to play recorded content until you turn it off and turn it back on again.
The only other downsides are the menu navigation system and the remote - both are a bit clumsy and not really intuitive.
For these few reasons I would not reccomend this product to my grandmother .. or even perhaps my parents.
That said for the stack of other handy features it does have and the sheer convenience it offers I would reccomend the DP-P1 to anyone who wants a hard disk recorder/PVR who also has a home computer and network and is reasonably (not highly) tech-savvy.
I have no regrets about buying my DP-P1 - and even my partner who was intially highly skeptical about "the box" has come to love it.
Four stars! |
