Samsung has hit the tape-less camcorder market running, with their Miniket VP-M110. The amount of features packed into its stylish, compact casing impressed everyone in the Digital Home headquarters.

If you need something light and portable – here’s something you can take anywhere, something to capture those treasured moments without being an encumbrance that means you can’t take part in them.

The VP-M110 is supplied with a nifty High Quality Video Performance MPEG4 – with a superb 576 pixels at 30 frames per second. It comes with a 10x optical zoom lens and 100x digital zoom and despite its size, it has an amazingly generous 2" LCD viewfinder – giving you a live video feed of the action to preview the images.

I purchased the Samsung Miniket VP-M110 with the goal of having a very small, tapeless digital video camera.

Overall I'm happy with the quality of the product; it is very well built and very small in size! The only thing I wish it had were better colour saturation in the videos; indoors the colours tend to be washed out; that's with the white balance either set to 'auto' or 'indoors'. Also, the photos are really poor in quality but as I bought this as a small, portable video recorder, that does not matter to me, but your mileage may vary.

The 10x optical zoom works well, and as far as I can tell, the electronic optical image stabiliser helps when at the highest zoom length. I have not tried out the MP3 player, webcam or voice recorder functionality.

Storage is inbuilt 1GB memory plus Memory Stick Pro slot. Recording capacity varies with the quality of video chosen. From memory, 1GB can hold about 20 minutes at near-DVD resolution.

Of note is the easy connectivity with both PC and Mac: the camcorder shows up as a USB disk. The bundled software for editing is decent - it appears that you can convert Samsung's mpeg4 encoding (I think it uses a proprietary codec) into other more common formats such as DV.

I'm also impressed by the accessories that have been included - two batteries (standard and extended life) and a carry case are pretty good.

If I remember correctly, I paid about $800 for the camcorder which I think is a bit overpriced given the quality of its images and video. Consider that compact digital cameras with much higher resolution and quality stills and equivalent video capabilities (sans 10x optical zoom) are now available for less. However given that there are few alternatives in the tapeless digital camcorder market, I would expect devices such as this to come down in price in a few years; this may be one of the best and most economical choices right now.
