5 out of 5 people found the following review helpful:

Pros: Compact, Easy to learn, Has both manual and automatic settings, Sleek design, Excellent flash, Perfect for people looking to move up in the photography world.
Cons: Noticable noise at higher ISO
After some careful consideration, I decided I wanted to move up in the photography world. No longer happy with just a basic point-and-shoot digital camera, i considered spending around $500 on a low-end digital SLR camera.

After deciding the learning curve was too steep, i just didn't feel ready for a dslr, instead I looked for a high-end, but still relatively cheap digital camera. That's where I found the SX100IS.

It offers (among many, many other things) a sleek black or silver design (I chose black). The body of the camera itself is easy to grip with its matte-like finish, however it may become slippery with sweaty hands (haven't tried this yet).

The flash is raised manually and is surprisingly powerful for the camera. On the rear of the camera there is a nice 2.5" lcd screen which is very easy to see in different light conditions. The controls on the back feature a few buttons for reviewing photos, changing the exposure settings, accessing the menus and transferring photos to your computer. The back also features an easy to use wheel button for navigating through the menus.

On the left side of the camera is a small "CR1220" battery compartment (battery is included however I'm yet to discover why. I can only assume to save the settings.

On the right side of the camera there are ports for an a/c adapter (not included) and the usb port (cable included in box). The right side also features a loop for the included wrist strap.

The bottom of the camera features the standard tripod connection screw hole as well as the battery/sd card compartment. The top of the camera, apart from to pop-up flash, gives us the power button, the shutter button which is also the zoom controls, and the scene selection wheel which most cameras have these days. This wheel includes the standard scenes such as portraits, landscapes and night view as well as the added bonus of "kids and pets" and the video feature (yes, this little camera even does video, albeit not to a very high quality, but this isnt a video camera so its pretty good for what it is). The wheel also features the options of P, Tv, Av and M, which allow for changing the different settings like shutter speed or aperature, with M being full manual control. The full manual control of the SX100IS is an excellent beginners step to the world of DSLR cameras.

Now, on to the picture quality. Featuring a 10x optical zoom and 8 megapixel count, you can finally get those high quality shots of wildlife that you have been craving for so long! :p

Indoor photos turn out surprisingly well thanks to the powerful flash. If you forget to raise the flash, you are remided on the lcd screen to do so. Outside, the colour replication is excellent and it produces amazing photos. I would go on, but I'm too keen to get back out there and use my SX100IS again!

Overall, this camera is perfect value for money and I would highly reccommend it to anyone looking for a powerful, yet compact and easy to use camera.
