Pros: Basically works as promised Cons: My AVI files won't play, menuing slow, no WPA security Bought the DSM-320 today.
Hooked it up had one issue right away. I use WPA security on my DLINK wireless router so I had to change that over to WEP which is not secure and also forces me to change my other wireless devices to use WEP. No good!
I couldn't get the device to get on the network using a static IP address. It only worked with DHCP. Thats not a real bad thing but that needs to be looked at if it's offered as an option and it failed to work for me. I birned an hour on that one.
I tried to play my AVI files that were loaded from a camcorder tape The DSM320 complained it did not support that format.
At one point the unit indicated that a later firware version was available so I had it update to 1.7 from 1.2. I tried to play my AVI files again and this time it still said it was not supported but at least it said I could use "Nero recode CE" to convert my files. Thats not really practicle since I have over 100GB of AVI files on my hard disks but nice to know.
One other issue I didn't like was when you are scrolling down lists of directories for your picture folder selection it pauses way too long between each scroll. I do have a lot of folders but that is not fun waiting for each screen to scroll.
Overall I liked the unit. This was my first experience with a media player and its cool. |
